Low-level chronic inflammation, associated with lifestyle, is found in most common diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. By now, we’ve all heard that COVID-19 has a mortality rate that increases with these pre-existing conditions.
In those who are most susceptible, the virus creates an acute and severe form of inflammation referred to as a “cytokine storm,” which then leads to more severe symptoms and respiratory damage. This, “cytokine storm,” is basically an overreaction of our immune system.
So, what can you do right now, while you are staying safe at home, to reduce or prevent chronic inflammation? Binge watching TV or gorging on “comfort food”? No! How about trying some different foods that reduce inflammation?
Most people know that things like berries, Reishi mushrooms, garlic, ginger, and green tea are Mother Nature’s medicine for a healthy immune system, but here’s another one that you might not know about.
The antiviral activity of lauric acid in Coconut Oil, can:
- Cause disintegration of the virus envelope (lipid layer that surrounds the core)
- Inhibit the replication of virus cells – YAY!
- Prevent the virus from binding to the host agent.
Some studies have found both the lauric acid and the monolaurin in coconut oil protect farm animals from viruses and have also been shown to have anti-HIV properties in small clinical studies with humans. Though clinical trials have yet to take place in regard to using coconut oil against COVID-19, the takeaway message of the findings so far is that coconut oil can act as a powerful ally in protecting your body from viruses, including COVID-19! After all, clinical trials of the medicines and other treatments being currently used have yet to take place and the side effects of those are MUCH greater than enjoying a bit of coconut oil!
I recommend replacing your oil of choice with coconut oil. I also use it as a spread on my toast in the morning. Tastes slightly sweeter than butter. what have you got to lose?
Another simple tool you can use is this exercise: Thymus Tap (or thump)
Try it, you’ll like it!
