Happy Thanksgiving to My Fellow Americans!
Will you be enjoying turkey this Thursday? I sure will—I love turkey! Once the feast is over and we’ve made our next-day turkey sandwiches, I always break out my crockpot to make my own bone broth with the turkey carcass. I freeze any leftover meat so I can add it to the broth later, along with my favorite veggies, for a delicious, hearty turkey soup.
Don’t forget to get outside for some exercise after your big meal! What’s the best exercise after your Thanksgiving feast? Anything outside! Whether it’s a stroll around the neighborhood or a hike in the woods, moving your body is a great way to work off some of those extra calories. This tradition started for my family when my sister used to host Thanksgiving in Virginia. We have so many wonderful memories of those post-dinner walks, filled with conversations we wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Exercise for Strength as You Age
Speaking of movement, in my new book, Age With Grace and Strength, I talk about alternative exercises to some of my favorite muscle-building moves. Today, I’m sharing one of those options with you.
As we age, building lower-body strength is crucial. It helps us stay fit for everyday tasks like getting up from a chair or couch, emptying the dishwasher, or feeling stable when walking.
While my hands down favorite lower-body exercise is my “Super Squat,” yoga enthusiasts might prefer something like the Warrior 2 Yoga Pose. This pose is a squat variation that builds strength in your quads and glutes. The key is to stay in the squat position for 30 seconds or more. If you can’t make it to 30 seconds at first, don’t worry—do what you can and build up gradually. You’ll be amazed at how strong you feel after just a few weeks of regular practice!
I recommend incorporating lower-body strengthening exercises like this at least four times a week. Remember: the best exercise is one you enjoy because that’s the one you’ll stick with.
