In the meantime, let’s talk about the hip pain that can come with age. Our hips, like other parts of our body, begin to wear out over time, but we can do something to reduce our pain. Today’s exercise is one tool that can help.
Our hip joint is designed to withstand significant of wear and tear, but it’s not indestructible. For example, when you walk, a cushion of cartilage helps prevent friction as the hip bone moves in its socket. With age and use, this cartilage can wear down or become damaged, and the hip bone itself can be fractured during a fall. When the muscles that work our hips get tired, other muscles begin to take up the slack. Our amazing body does this on its own, without even thinking about it. However, this compensation can also lead to more pain.
One culprit that causes a lot of grief for those who sit a lot or who are proponents of the “feast, then famine” method of exercise is the iliopsoas muscle. This one is on the front of your body, and it travels from the front side of your vertebrae to the front of your hip joint. Unlike our hamstrings or the piriformis muscle, the iliopsoas is more difficult to stretch and relax because it lies deep in your pelvic region.
Fortunately, there is hope! Today’s exercise can help provide relief.
Give this low lunge a try, and let me know how it feels.
And, if you’ve been thinking of taking a Pilates or Yoga class, my class schedule is below. Let me know which class you’d be interested in!
